The God Who Is… Week 3
Day 1 – Relating to a Known God
Read Exodus 32:1-14.
From memory, list as much as you can remember about what has happened so far in Exodus:
The Israelites have just escaped slavery and certain death if the Egyptian army had not drowned in the Red Sea. God has just started giving them the Law, and he calls Moses to come up to Mt. Sinai so He can give him a written copy of the Ten Commandments – the ten laws that summarize every other Law. What is Israel’s first act as a nation?
God, being God, knows something evil is happening down in the camp while He and Moses are on the mountain. What is His reaction to what He knows the Israelites are doing? Does this seem like an overreaction based on what you know about God so far?
What does God allow Moses to do in this moment? Why is Moses allowed to do so?
Based on this week’s group study, what do you know about the way Moses addresses God? How does this knowledge inform your answer to the last question?
Why does verse 14 make perfect sense, now that you know a bit about God?
What does verse 14 teach you about what can happen sometimes when we pray?
Prayer Ideas:
- Thank God that even though He is eternal – knows the beginning and the end of your story – that He still wants to hear from you and that He loves you enough to listen and respond with compassion when you pray.
- Bring to God any questions or concerns you have about what you’ve been learning. Talk openly with Him about them, knowing that He wants to hear what you’re wrestling with.
